Fox Newscast

I'm finally getting a chance to upload the Fox newscast from the Waterfront Film Festival. Special thanks to Michele DeSelms for getting us a copy of the video. Even if I look terrible in the interview. I blame Dawn my hair stylist. It was really my fault. I told her to cut my hair that short. Never again. This is why I choose to stay behind the camera.

Waterfront 2007!!!

I'm back from the 2007 Waterfront Film Festival. It only took me 6 days to recover. If you ever had to look up "Film Festival Party" in an encyclopedia, Waterfront would have their photo there. What a crazy festival. I can't even begin to describe the events that took place. All I can say is that they know how to throw a party and more importantly...make you feel at home. Pictures, articles, and radio interviews are below...

-Chris

The Damnwells Perform LIVE at the Waterfront Film Festival

Here's an interview Alex Dezen did for mlive.com last week before they took the stage at the Waterfront Film Festival.

Notes From the Waterfront Film Festival
by John Serba

I had a chance to sit down and talk with Alex Dezen, singer and guitarist for The Damnwells prior to the band's performance at the opening-night party for the Waterfront Film Festival.

He had a lot to say about the documentary "Golden Days," which captures the band in the midst of its nearly career-destroying split with Epic Records.

"The director (Chris Suchorsky) was a friend of a friend," Dezen said, sitting in Marro's, a Saugatuck pizzeria. "I got to know him because I liked his first film, 'Failure,' which was about his own failure to get a movie made.

"We were going into the studio to make a record, and he was just shooting us. There was no intention to make a film. When we were in the studio, the camera was rolling. When we were on the road, the camera was rolling. So when we were dropped from Epic, the cameras were rolling."

So, was it surreal, seeing yourself in a movie?

"At first," Dezen said. "It was also very hard to watch, but I've warmed to it now. There's a tense scene where I argue with our former A&R guy, and when I get the phone call saying we were dropped."

Dezen told me "Golden Days" is essentially an underdog movie, something that even those not drawn to rock 'n' roll documentaries could relate to.

"That's why people like Sanjaya on 'American Idol,' why 'Rocky' is a staple of American culture. We have to see him get beaten up before he becomes the champ.

"Of course, we just got beaten up," Dezen said with a laugh, before adding that the Damnwells' real success came after the split with the label. "But we still ended up getting opening slots for the Dixie Chicks and The Fray, so the movie ends on a high note.

"It's more about one's ability to overcome adversity, without being hugely successful. You just learn to take what you're given. I think Teddy Roosevelt said that -- just take what you're given."

The discussion then roamed to the outdated mechanics of the music business, and specifically, major labels. The group has since signed with Zoe, a subsidiary of indie label Rounder Records, and released sophomore album "Air Stereo" last year.

"Major labels will soon go the way of dinosaurs," Dezen opined. "They only know how to do it a certain way -- they squeeze the square peg into a round hole."

As for "Golden Days," Dezen hopes it does really well, and wishes Suchorsky, who's hoping to gain national distribution for the movie, will "make millions of dollars, and show it to as many people as he can."

Of course, the film's success can only raise the Damnwells' profile. The band has been helping Suchorsky promote the movie with appearances at festivals when they can.

"If anybody sees the film and becomes a fan, it can only help," he said. "But it's only shown at three festivals so far. It's only really just begun."

Great Waterfront Article

The Grand Rapids Press did a great story on the Waterfront Film Festival today. GOLDEN DAYS got a bit of attention in the article. Here's a sample...

Want to know the synergistic element of this year's Waterfront Film Festival?

You'll get the chance to see two sides of the music business: Brooklyn band The Damnwells will perform for the festival's opening-night party Thursday. Then, witness the group's behind-the-music drama in the documentary "Golden Days," which screens at 4:30 p.m. Friday and 9 p.m. Saturday.

In addition, the film's director, Chris Suchorsky, is scheduled to discuss the movie in the "Make a Doc that Rocks" seminar at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The film tells the story of a talented band chewed up and spat out by the corporate end of the industry.

The Damnwells Appearing At Waterfront?!?!?

Last week I mentioned that "we" can't wait for the 2007 Waterfront Film Festival. Well, considering that the film festival is just one week away I guess I can announce that The Damnwells will be performing at the opening night event in Saugatuck, MI. From what I'm hearing it's a pretty big event. Like I said before, these guys have a beer named after them...

The party starts at 6:00 PM. Admission is FREE!!! So if you're in the area, make sure you head over to Waterfront to see the band perform live. Remember...it's just a short two hour drive from Chicago. So come out, meet the band, see the film and have a good time.

Ryan and Scarlett Visit The Damnwells in LA

The Damnwells made it into People Magazine this past week. Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson have been making headlines lately and they decided to take the band with them. Last week Ryan and Scarlett were seen at the Toubadour in LA catching a Damnwells' show together. Ryan is a big fan of the band. He's such a big fan that he may have even gotten them on the soundtrack for one of his new films. More to come on that later.

GOLDEN DAYS Getting Some Attention In Nashville

If you didn't know already, The Damnwells are currently on tour with Ari Hest. They ran through Nashville last week to play a show at the Mercy Lounge. Nicole Kieper of The Tennessean writes...

Folks at large don't tire of the clichéd boy meets girl/boy loses girl story because it's a universal thing, the idea of seeking love and then watching it crumble. No less clichéd, really, is the band meets record label/band lands in contract limbo story. And if you're interested in art or artists even slightly, the idea of seeking success and watching your career stagnate rings just as universally. That's a part of what bodes well for documentary Golden Days — which follows Brooklyn band The Damnwells' trip on that oft-traveled road.

GOLDEN DAYS Wins Best Documentary at Phoenix!!!

The 2007 Phoenix Film Festival kicked off the opening night celebration with the AZ premiere of FRACTURE starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling. The following day, GOLDEN DAYS made its world premiere at the Harkins Cine Capri in Scottsdale, AZ. The Damnwells headlined the festival party later that night and played a show that ended with David Chernis nearly setting fire to his guitar. The party lasted into the early hours of the morning. Luckily no one was arrested. Mr. Chernis was seen making pizzas at a local italian eatery at 3:00 AM with an unidentified man.

The film played two more times over the weekend and received an amazing response. Theater goers formed long lines following the screening to get a signed copy of Air Stereo.

On Sunday night, GOLDEN DAYS was awarded the Copper Wing Award for Best Documentary. Lead Singer Alex Dezen and Director Chris Suchorsky accepted the award due to the fact that rest of the band had to get back to their jobs.

GOLDEN DAYS received an additional screening the following day in response to its award.

Concert Live Wire Review - 4 Stars

David Malsch of Concert Live Wire writes "Golden Days" is a terrific film that deserves to be seen as much as its music deserves to be heard and not only by wannabe rock and roll stars, but by a public starved for something new and real."

The Big Picture With Colin Boyd

Colin Boyd gave us anamazing review. Here's a few memorable quotes.

"Director Chris Suchorsky not only manages to capture the moments that deserve to be documented, but the placement and structuring of the recording sessions is outstanding, a better accomplishment that the Dixie Chicks doc Shut Up & Sing, and the recording sessions in that film are the highlights."

"Golden Days is a rewarding film from beginning to end. It competently handles the allure of rock n' roll with the crippling reality of the music business, and somehow, does so with eternal optimism."
